I've seen it work, and you've probably heard it before. Watch your carb intake, and you'll lose weight... Carbs are not good for you because they turn to sugar... Don't eat too much bread... And how many labels have you read wondering how many grams of carbs are in it? Hundreds, even thousands? From the recommendation of our doctor, my husband has been following this little low-carb diet plan, and he's been quite successful with weight loss. Physically, it does seem to work, but spiritually, well, that's another story.
This morning I was reading in John chapter six, and I realized a funny thing. We should not be low-carb Christians, spiritually speaking. In fact, it's just the opposite. Jesus calls Himself the Bread of Life! If we come to Him, we'll never go hungry and if we believe in Him, we'll never go thirsty. We should be craving this Holy Carb! (Not intended to be sacrilegious!) But the truth is, how many of us don't take the time to eat of the Bread of Life? Sure, we got our initial helping when we made the decision to follow Him, but what about the ongoing Carb intake (with a Capital C!)? Are we seeking a high-Carb diet each day with Jesus as the main ingredient? How complacent are we in prioritizing our Spiritual food intake?
I remember that old School House Rock jingle from Saturday mornings (yes, I know, I'm dating myself!) It went something like this: "You are what you eat from your head down to your feet..." Are we living, eating, breathing Jesus? Can people who know us see that we are indulging in this Delicacy by what they see on the outside? Is he the sole One we crave?
So which is better? A low-Carb or a high-Carb diet as a Christian?
Luke 6:34 "Sir, from now on, give us this Bread."
